Cantabile Festival | Transfigured Night

In this concert the work of Mozart and Schönberg will be highlighted

The repertoire of the Cantabile Festival interweaves past and present, taking us on a musical journey.
With artistic direction again in the hands of world-famous soloist Diemut Poppen, the Cantabile Festival brings prestigious chamber music to Portugal.

Transfigured Night is one of the seminal pieces from Schönberg’s first period of creativity, marking a new period of composition in which the composer took the risk of searching for a new form of expression, that later became the twelve-tone serialism (dodecaphony). Inspired by the poem of the modernist Richard Dehmel, Schönberg wrote to the poet acknowledging its instrumental influence in its writing, stimulated by the need to reflect in music the feelings and anxieties that the verses aroused in him. The confrontation between opposites, imprinted in Dehmel’s poetry, served as a beacon for the development of a transgressive and revolutionary musical language that left profound marks on the music of that time.
