Artists, essayists, curators hold a round table discussion about the purpose of the exhibition
A variety of opinions deepens the interpretation of the works and journeys of the artists, relates contemporary artistic contexts and practices to the modern-day, with the themes handled by the artists featured.
This is a challenging installation piece in the choir area of the old church of S. Julião comprising a sculpture suggesting the traditional oxcart. Loaded into the cart are bars of gold – made of bread – an allusion to the qualities of labour and survival associated with money, with feeding the body, and with life itself.
The silent piece invites a dialogue about the contradictions of the current world: on the one hand is spirituality; and on the other is the material nature of gold and capital.
Are these the sacred places of contemporaneity.
The piece is related to the history of the exhibition space itself – passing from place of worship to vault of the Bank of Portugal.
Together with this piece is a second sculpture, more intimate, evoking another affinity with the visitor and a new “plane” upon which to interpret the installation.
