The use of stakes during the Pombaline period assumed a prominent role in the imaginary of the reconstruction of Lisbon following the earthquake of 1755, but few examples are available for public viewing.

An object of fascination, the stakes – which still today buttress some city blocks in Baixa – became an icon, inseparable from the scenery of a rational and enlightened Lisbon.

The archaeological excavation at the Headquarters of Banco of Portugal provided the city with a rare opportunity to uncover a huge set of stakes, now revealed to the public for the first time. Including some of the documents produced during the archaeological excavation, this exhibition draws attention to the key features of the stakes as functional and symbolic elements.

An image of excellence in the (re)foundation of Lisbon, hidden beneath our very feet.
