In Classical Antiquity amphorae were the containers par excellence for shipping food items. Their abundance as an archaeological find in modern times has turned them into important records of ancient economic activity, improving our understanding of production, consumer behaviour, and the trade patterns of which they were a apart.
The exhibition includes many fragments of amphorae made in Lusitania and the things they contained, such as wine, olive oil, and fish paste. Also included are testaments to the leading role that Olisipo (Lisbon) played in the Mediterranean trade circuits.
Roman trade routes linking various parts of the Empire, the coins used in the transactions, and the many forms of ancient amphorae are also included. The exhibition departs from the port of Olisipo for destinations stretching from Gaul, to the Italian peninsula, North Africa, and even the distant coast of today’s Turkey.
