A living collection
The numismatic collection of Banco de Portugal is a living and open collection, constantly evolving since more than four decades. Its growth is only possible thanks to an active acquisition policy. The objects have been acquired from collectors and in auctions, both in Portugal and abroad.
Despite the dramatic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in the Money Museum work, the collection didn’t stop growing, and it was further enriched through new acquisitions. In this exhibition, were present some of the objects added to collection between 2019 and 2021, mostly but not exclusively coins. Some are rare, other not so much, but equally interesting.
The diversity of periods and geographies reflects the comprehensiveness of the Banco de Portugal collection and its effort to document, as fully as possible, the monetary history of Portugal and Portuguese-related territories, without neglecting the worldwide history of money.
