Cycle Lisbon “Positive” - From convent to conservatory: os caetanos

Free admission

This cycle of lectures reflects on the metamorphoses of convents, monasteries and colleges, some of which would resist to the present day and have adapted to new functions.

In this program we continue the theme of the last cycle of lectures, talking about the conversion of monasteries and convents in the city of Lisbon, reflecting on the metamorphoses of buildings that, like the Church of São Julião, survived time, different appropriations, and became scenarios visited daily by many Lisbon residents.

The extinction of religious orders in the 19th century gave a new life to dozens of convents, monasteries and colleges, some of which are still standing today. Striking elements in the urban landscape and with undeniable architectural value, these buildings would have their physiognomy reformulated by new functions. In the first edition we focused on museums, in a direct relation to the old church of S. Julião - Museu do Dinheiro. This time, we dare to enter barracks, prisons, hospitals and, in full April 25, in the parliament, located in the former Monastery of São Bento da Saúde.
