Cycle Lisbon “Positive”: Bernardas Convents

Free admission

This cycle of lectures reflects on the metamorphoses of convents, monasteries and colleges, some of which would resist to the present day and have adapted to new functions.

We return to conversations about Lisbon, visiting the heritage that is visible to all. We talk of archaeology, and of “positive layers”, those that are above rather than below ground level, and therefore are with us every day.
The dissolution of the religious orders in the 19th century meant the repurposing of many religious buildings in the city of Lisbon, giving a new direction to dozens of convents, monasteries and colleges, some of which are still standing today. Key elements in the urban landscape with an undeniable architectural value, these buildings would be restructured for new duties: museums, hospitals, barracks and public services adapted themselves and the interiors of formerly empty spaces in interventions that were more or less aggressive to the original built fabric.
This lecture cycle reflects on the metamorphoses of these buildings which, just like São Julião church, have survived time, and different uses and have become scenarios visited on a daily basis by many Lisbonese.
This cycle, curated scientifically by archaeologist Artur Rocha, counted on the participation of investigators from the LX Conventos project of the Instituto de História da Arte (art history institute) of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.
