The first tour looked at the background. We now reflect on the way in which Magellan developed the plan for his voyage and how he guaranteed Spain’s sponsorship.
500 years after the beginning of Ferdinand Magellan’s circumnavigation, we want to better understand its background and consequences. By way of a cycle of tours between 2019 and 2022, we aim to answer questions about a voyage and a figure that to this day are considered mythical, exploring the geopolitical, economic and social implications of the expedition.
The first tour looked at the background. We now reflect on the way in which Magellan developed the plan for his voyage and how he guaranteed Spain’s sponsorship. How was Magellan welcomed in Seville? Why did Charles I of Spain, future Holy Roman Emperor accept a project that may have put him on a collision course with Portugal? Who financed the mission? Why did Magellan enter into the Order of Santiago? And finally, how did Portugal react?
