"Where were we 20 years ago?" - From the escudo to the euro, designing our money
In this seminar cycle, we celebrate the euro’s 20th anniversary from a cultural, aesthetic and socioeconomic perspective, with artists and managers who tell us about banknote and coin design in the first person, the international bids for the euro and the preparations for the complex changeover operation for the new currency.
The single currency, the euro, which we use every day, was born 20 years ago. For some it seems like only yesterday. Others can’t remember having used our previous currency. So how did we welcome a new currency that was unknown with a conversion that wasn’t easy? And what memories do we treasure of the old Portuguese money? How was the transition and when was it prepared from? What is there of each one of us in this currency that we are now so used to, we no longer pay any attention. What has really changed is the question that the public is encouraged to asked, revisiting their own lives.
