Fire at Sea (Gianfranco Rosi, Itália, documentary, 2016)
Samuele is 12 and lives on an island in the Mediterranean. Like many boys of his age he goes to school and spends his free time wandering the island and playing with his slingshot. Around Samuele is the sea, and there are men, women and children trying to make the crossing from Africa in boats that are far too small and run-down. The island where Samuele lives is Lampedusa, which has become a metaphor for the flight of refugees to Europe, the hopes, hardship and fate of hundreds of thousands of emigrants. Every day the inhabitants of Lampedusa bear witness to the greatest humanitarian tragedy of our times, despite these two worlds barely meeting.
