Easter Concert - Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa and RTVE Choir

Free admission

Easter Concert by Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa and RTVE Choir

The figure of Beethoven features in the encyclopaedias as that of an inveterate humanist, unhappy with the conditions of his existence. It is, however, well known that even though he never attended liturgical rites as an adult, the musician had a Roman Catholic upbringing and never turned his back on his deep spiritual awareness – which was actually more profound at the end of his life. In 1818, when he discovered that Archduke Rudolf, his friend and patron, would be made a Cardinal and consecrated as Archbishop of Moravia, he offered to compose a Mass for the ceremony. However, it would only be completed five years later, showing the care and persistence with which he handled the project. He studied the composition techniques for 17th century sacred music, especially those of J. S. Bach. He became acquainted with a form of approaching the missal that was free from contamination by the Italian opera that surrounded him. And he gave the world an opus in his own name, pure and majestic, reminding us that, at the same time, he was writing his Ninth Symphony. At the top of the score he wrote: “From the heart – may it return to the heart!”
