From Venice to Hamburg - concert by Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa

Free admission

In the International Museum Night we will host a concert by Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa: From Venice to Hamburg

The music programme alludes to two cities that are central to European trade, Venice and Hamburg, situated in the north and south of continental Europe and sharing various characteristics.
Historically, port cities with great economic power, cosmopolitan centres frequented by people from the most diverse cultures and interests, invest heavily in their faith in the arts as a form of enriching their ideals and civic values. In the time of Vivaldi, Venice no longer displayed the riches of previous centuries, but it was going through a moment of great artistic splendour. In terms of music, the La Pietà church was one of the most dynamic centres of activity. It was here that, from 1703, Vivaldi wrote numerous concertos to be played by the teachers and students of the nearby orphanage. On the other hand, Hamburg became the wealthiest city in Europe. The first public opera house outside Italy was built there in 1678. Many people referred to Hamburg as the “Venice of the North” on account of the canals that criss-cross the city. C. P. E. Bach succeeded Telemann as the city’s Director of Music in 1768. He therefore associated with the intellectual elite of the period and composed some of his best symphonies.
