Cinema at the Museum - Living the city III

Free admission

Lisbon Story, by Wim Wenders, Germany/Portugal, 1994 (100 min.)

What Lisbon used to be, what remains and what the city is today: we present three distinct viewpoints over the last 25 years.
Starting in the current, globalised and cosmopolitan city, we travel to unknown, off-the-beaten-track places where the new Lisboners live. They are immigrants, and their culture enriches public spaces with rituals, languages and traditions, filling them and bringing them closer to a reality that entails more than the mere sharing of spaces.
Like a mirror image, we then show you another viewpoint, focusing on the memory and identity of a district that seeks to understand the legacy of tradition in the present/future.
Finally, we look into Lisbon through foreign eyes and go back to the 1990s. This film comprises a collection of images and sounds captured by the main character which serve as the foundation upon which we can relive a transition period in the capital city’s recent history.
Moving from a poetic portrait to a political record, three films show the city as an ever-changing, living organism.

Lisbon Story, by Wim Wenders, Germany/Portugal, 1994 (100 min.)

A poetic trip across Lisbon, which also provides a platform for a reflection on the nature of cinema, and the value of image and sound. Phillip Winter (Rüdiger Vogler) is a German sound engineer who, at a movie director friend’s request, travels to Lisbon to help him with a film. Winter doesn’t meet up with his friend, and instead comes across a fascinating city, whose sounds he records, while meeting many famous Portuguese artists, such as the band Madredeus and movie director Manoel de Oliveira. Madredeus also provide the soundtrack to the film.
