Cinema at the Museum - Living the city II

Free admission

Alto Bairro, by Rui Simões , Portugal, 2014 (98 min.)

What Lisbon used to be, what remains and what the city is today: we present three distinct viewpoints over the last 25 years.
Starting in the current, globalised and cosmopolitan city, we travel to unknown, off-the-beaten-track places where the new Lisboners live. They are immigrants, and their culture enriches public spaces with rituals, languages and traditions, filling them and bringing them closer to a reality that entails more than the mere sharing of spaces.
Like a mirror image, we then show you another viewpoint, focusing on the memory and identity of a district that seeks to understand the legacy of tradition in the present/future.
Finally, we look into Lisbon through foreign eyes and go back to the 1990s. This film comprises a collection of images and sounds captured by the main character which serve as the foundation upon which we can relive a transition period in the capital city’s recent history.
Moving from a poetic portrait to a political record, three films show the city as an ever-changing, living organism.

Alto Bairro, by Rui Simões , Portugal, 2014 (98 min.)

1950, Bairro Alto. João is 13 years old and decides to make his first incursion into the ‘red light district’ in Lisbon. This kicks off a new stage in his life, set in a neighbourhood also made of many distinct levels. What’s left of the famous Bairro Alto where prostitutes, journalists, artists and artisans lived? What has changed, and how does it affect the future of the city? We follow the faces and the voices that fill up the empty streets by day and the busy streets by night, in an attempt to encapsulate the memories and expectations, dreams and desires that make up the whole of Bairro Alto, on its 500th anniversary.
The film also features conversations with public figures that have lived there for several years, including Anita Guerreiro, Gisela João, Capicua, António Zambujo, António Sala, Mariza and José Fonseca e Costa.
