Tempus Fugit: Life, death and memory in the former Church of S. Julião

Free admission

Guided tour with the Archaeologist Artur Rocha
Part of the Science and Technology week

The history of this building, the former Church of S. Julião, is told by its closest ancestors, the population of the first half of the 19th century, entombed in the cemetery that today is the site of the Museum. We ask, who are these individuals? How did they live? How did they die? What did they take on their final journey?
The exhibition adds a new chapter to the building's long history: that of its emergence as a sacred space. The three exhibition spaces present anthropological and archaeological evidence from the cemetery's individual and collective burials, physical finds, documentation, photography and collector's items that provide a context for issues raised during the investigation and questions typical of a large-scale excavation, in the field of funerary archaeology, in Lisbon, in the 21st century.
We wanted to exhibit the scientific contribution that the evidence from the dead makes to our understanding of the conditions of life and, from that perspective, show the consequences of time and of the transformations recorded in physical material, or in what remains of it.
